Vibrators
How to choose a vibrator: six questions, in the order that matters
The question people ask first is which vibrator is best. The question that actually narrows the field is what you already know about your own body, and it comes before every specification on the box.
This page does not classify vibrators. The map of shapes and mechanisms is on the types of vibrators page, and the categories here are the ones it defines. What follows is the decision procedure: six questions in a deliberate order, where each answer removes a large part of the catalog before you look at a single product page.
The order is the useful part. Asking about battery life first leaves you comparing eighty toys. Asking what kind of sensation you respond to first leaves you comparing eight.
The six questions
External, internal, or both?
This removes more of the catalog than anything else. If you already know that clitoral stimulation is what works, a rabbit is an expensive way to carry an internal arm you will not use. If you do not know yet, buy for external use first: it is the answer for most people and the cheaper mistake.
Concentrated or spread?
A bullet, a lipstick and a pinpoint air-pulse nozzle all put sensation in one small place. A wand, a broad head and a larger nozzle spread it over everything nearby. People usually have a strong preference and discover it in one session. If pressing a running toy against a knuckle tells you anything, it is this.
Does noise decide anything?
If someone else is in the home, this is a hard constraint and it belongs this early, because it rules out mains-powered wands and most thrusting toys outright. Published decibel figures across brands are not comparable, so owner reports in a shared flat are more informative than any number on a box.
What is the material, and does it have a stated waterproof rating?
Silicone, ABS plastic, glass or steel, named by the maker. If the listing will not say, that is the answer. The IP code matters only if the toy is going near water, and a toy with a visible charging socket is not going near water whatever the listing claims.
How does it charge, and what happens when the charger is lost?
Magnetic pins mean a sealed body and a dedicated cable to keep. A standard USB-C port means no proprietary cable and a hole in the shell. Replaceable batteries mean neither problem and more weight. There is no right answer, only the one that fits your household.
Does it need an app, and is that a feature or a dependency?
App control is genuinely the point for long-distance use and for patterns a partner drives. It is also an account, a firmware update and a toy whose best feature depends on the maker still publishing the app in five years. Buy it when the feature is the reason, not as a bonus.
What the specifications on the box are worth
- Number of modes. Nearly worthless. People use two or three settings and ignore the rest. Ten patterns is a manufacturing decision, not a capability.
- Maximum intensity. Less important than the minimum. Almost every toy is strong enough at the top; the ones people keep are the ones whose first setting is gentle enough to start on.
- Battery life in minutes. Useful only when compared against the same brand, because makers quote it at different intensities and almost never say which.
- Rumbly or buzzy. A real and widely reported difference in how deep the vibration feels, with no published measurement behind it anywhere. Treat it as a description of other owners experience, not a specification.
- Dimensions. The one figure that is both reliable and consistently ignored. Insertable length and widest circumference decide comfort more than any feature in the list above.
Questions people ask
- Is a more powerful vibrator better?
- Only up to the point where it is strong enough, which almost all of them are. Past that, a gentler lowest setting and a quieter motor matter far more to whether a toy gets used.
- Should a first vibrator be cheap?
- A first one should be cheap enough to be wrong, because the chance of the mechanism not suiting you is real. Once you know which mechanism works, spending more is worth it.
- How do I judge noise before buying?
- Not from the decibel figure, which brands measure differently and rarely under the same conditions. Owner reviews that mention a shared wall or a flatmate are the most useful signal available.
- Does the material really matter if it is external?
- Yes. Porous materials hold bacteria in places you cannot clean even for external use, and an unnamed material is the one that is most likely to be porous. Silicone, ABS, glass and steel can all be cleaned properly.
