Vibrators

Bullet vibrators: small motors, and the physics that limits them

A bullet is the most borrowed toy shape there is: cheap, pocketable, precise. The compromise is physical, and knowing it is what separates a good purchase from a drawer full of them.

A bullet does one thing: it puts a concentrated vibration on a small area, with nothing in the way. No handle, no arm, no insertable shaft. That makes it the obvious first toy, the obvious travel toy, and the obvious addition during sex with a partner, because it fits where a larger toy cannot.

It also means the motor has almost no room, and that is not a manufacturing problem anyone can solve with a better brand. Most small vibrating motors spin an off-center weight, and the amplitude of the vibration they produce depends on how big that weight is and how far off center it sits. Shrink the toy and you shrink both. The frequency stays high while the amplitude collapses, and high frequency with low amplitude is exactly what people mean when they call a toy buzzy.

What separates one bullet from another

  • Motor type. A few bullets use a linear motor driving a mass back and forth instead of a spinning weight. Those are the ones that feel deeper at the same size, and they cost several times more. Everything else in the category is spinning a weight.
  • Tip geometry. A flat tip spreads the vibration, a tapered one concentrates it, and a flexible neck lets the tip stay in contact when you move. For pinpoint use this matters more than power.
  • Material of the shell. Hard plastic transmits the buzz efficiently and feels more intense. Silicone over the shell softens it and feels warmer. Neither is better; they are opposite answers to the same question.
  • Battery or rechargeable. Coin-cell bullets are cheap, leak, and lose power as the cell drains, which means the toy you liked is gradually not the toy you own. Rechargeable ones hold their output until they stop.
  • Whether it is waterproof or merely splash-resistant. Bullets end up in showers more than any other shape, and the two ratings are not the same claim.

Where we would start, and why

  1. 1

    The exception to the buzz

    We-VibeWe-Vibe Tango X

The bullet that the rest of the category is measured against, because it is the one that feels deep rather than sharp at this size. It is also the loudest argument for spending more than the minimum here.

    Strengths
    • Noticeably deeper sensation than the category norm
    • Holds output until the battery is actually empty
    • Flat angled tip stays in contact
    Limitations
    • Several times the price of a basic bullet
    • Hard shell transmits every bit of the buzz, which some find too much
    Best for
Anyone who tried a cheap bullet, found it thin and assumed small toys were not for them.

  2. 2

If you want it controlled from a phone

    LovenseLovense Ambi

A bullet with a bent neck and app control, which turns the most borrowed toy shape into one a partner can drive from across the room or from another city.

    Strengths
    • App and long-distance control
    • Angled neck suits a hand at an awkward angle
    • Physical button works without the app
    Limitations
    • App wants an account
    • Buzzier than the linear-motor bullets
    • More to go wrong than a toy with one button
    Best for
Partnered use, and anyone already in the same app ecosystem.

  3. 3

If it has to be invisible

    LeloLelo Mia 3

Shaped and cased like a cosmetic, and charged over USB without a proprietary cable, which is the reason this shape exists: it survives being seen in a bag.

    Strengths
    • Reads as a lipstick rather than a toy
    • No proprietary charger to lose
    • Smooth body, easy to wipe down
    Limitations
    • Modest power
    • Narrow tip is too pointed for some
    • Not designed for serious water use
    Best for
Travel, shared rooms and bags other people open.

  4. 4

    If you actually meant internal

    We-VibeWe-Vibe Jive 2

Listed here because the most common disappointment with bullets is buying one for internal use. This is the shape that answers that: a retrieval cord, a body made for it, and app control.

    Strengths
    • Designed to be worn internally
    • Quiet
    • Retrieval cord rather than nothing to hold
    Limitations
    • No clitoral contact
    • Not a pinpoint external toy at all
    • Needs the app for most patterns
    Best for
Someone whose shortlist of bullets was really a shortlist of wearables.

Choosing in four questions

  1. External or internal?

Bullets are external. If the plan involves anything internal, you want an egg or a wearable with a cord, and the rest of this list does not apply.

  2. Did a cheap one disappoint you?

If the complaint was thin or itchy rather than weak, the fix is a linear motor, not more levels. If the complaint was simply weak, a larger shape will serve you better than any bullet.

  3. Does anyone else see your luggage?

Then the case and the charging cable matter as much as the motor. A proprietary magnetic cable is a thing to explain; a USB-C port is not.

  4. Will it get wet?

Look for a stated submersible rating. Splash-resistant means the sink, not the bath, and the difference shows up as a dead toy rather than a warning.

Questions people ask

Why does my bullet feel itchy rather than strong?
That is the high-frequency, low-amplitude signature of a small spinning weight. More intensity levels will not fix it. A linear-motor bullet or a larger toy will.
Are coin-cell bullets worth buying?
As a disposable, sometimes. They weaken as the cell drains, the compartments leak, and the cheapest ones rarely declare their shell material. A basic rechargeable from a named brand is better value within a few uses.
Can a bullet be used during sex with a partner?
That is the shape most suited to it, since there is no handle in the way. Check that it is fully waterproof and that the shell material is compatible with whatever lubricant is in use.
Is a bullet a good first toy?
It is the cheapest way to learn where you like pressure and how much. It is also the shape most likely to make someone conclude that toys do not work for them, which is usually a motor limitation rather than an anatomical one.
