Sex toys as a gift: the three rules that save the present

A sex toy is a strange thing to receive, because the giver has made a guess about the receiver’s body in public. Everything that makes this gift work follows from taking that seriously.

There are two ways this gift goes wrong, and neither of them is about choosing the wrong brand. The first is specificity: a toy aimed at a particular act or a particular anatomy tells the person you have decided something about them, and if the guess is off the present becomes awkward rather than exciting. The second is obligation: a gift that only makes sense if it gets used creates pressure, and pressure is the opposite of what anybody wants here.

Both problems have the same solution, which is to give something broadly good rather than something precisely targeted, and to make it trivially easy to swap. That is less romantic than a bold choice, and it is the reason the bold choices sit in drawers.

The three rules

  • Choose broad over specific. An external vibrator, a bullet or a good lubricant works for almost anybody. Anything anal, anything penetrative with a specific size, anything strap-on, and anything that implies a particular act is a guess about somebody else’s preferences, made out loud.
  • Make the return easy, and say so. Buy where the return policy is real, keep the receipt or the order number, and tell them it is swappable. This single sentence removes the obligation, and it is the part people skip.
  • Buy for the room they are actually in. Shared walls, housemates, children in the house, travel. A loud toy, a toy that charges with a visible cradle, or a toy with no case is a gift that is harder to own than it looks.

The safest two choices, and why

  1. 1

    The broadest good gift

    WomanizerWomanizer Classic 2

An air-pulse toy is external, requires no decision about size, and is the category with the highest rate of people being surprised by how much they like it. This one is the plain version of the format: gentle first setting, nothing to configure, no app.

    Strengths
    • External only, so no guess about anatomy or preference
    • Gentle at its lowest setting, which is what matters for a first toy
    • Stops when lifted off the body, which is the practical noise answer
    • No app, no account, nothing to set up before it works
    Limitations
    • Air pulse genuinely does nothing for a minority of people, which is why the return policy matters
    • Costs more than a bullet
    Best for
A gift for somebody whose preferences you do not know in detail.

  2. 2

If a buzzing object is less of a leap

    We-VibeWe-Vibe Touch X

A broad lay-on vibrator with no insertable part. It is the least presumptuous powered toy in our catalog: it can be used over clothing, by either partner, on more than one part of the body, and it requires no instructions.

    Strengths
    • Flat, quiet and simple, with one obvious button
    • Works through clothing and on areas other than genitals
    • Fully waterproof, so it is easy to keep clean
    Limitations
    • Broad contact rather than pinpoint, which suits some people and not others
    • Looks like a sex toy, which matters if discretion is part of the gift
    Best for
A couple, or anybody who would find an air-pulse toy too unfamiliar.

Choosing in four questions

  1. Has this ever been discussed between you?

If the answer is no, this is probably not the gift, or it is a gift that comes with a conversation rather than a surprise. A sex toy arriving unannounced from somebody who has never raised the subject lands as a comment, not a present.

  2. Do they already own toys?

If yes, buy an accessory, a storage solution or a gift card rather than guessing at a second device. People with toys have preferences, and preferences are exactly the thing you cannot see from outside.

  3. Is the toy for them, or for the two of you?

A couple’s toy is a gift to a shared activity and is easier to get right. A toy for them alone is a gift to their private life, and the broad-over-specific rule applies with full force.

  4. How does it arrive, and where does it live?

Plain packaging, a discreet delivery, and a toy that has somewhere to be stored. A present that cannot be unwrapped in the room it is given in, or kept in the home it is given to, is a problem rather than a surprise.

Questions people ask

Is this ever a bad idea?
It is a bad idea as a surprise for somebody with whom you have never discussed sex toys, as a gift from a colleague or an acquaintance, and as a hint about something you want changed. In an established relationship where the subject is open, it is an ordinary and well-received present.
Can a sex toy be returned?
Usually not once opened, for hygiene reasons, which is exactly why the swap has to happen before unwrapping. Buy from a seller with a clear unopened-returns policy, keep the order number, and tell them it can be exchanged. Several maker-run stores also run their own satisfaction guarantees, which is worth checking on the product page.
What about a cheap novelty toy as a joke?
The material is the problem rather than the humor. Novelty toys are the part of the market where unnamed soft plastics are common, and a joke gift that is not body-safe is one somebody might actually use. A card is funnier and safer.
Does it have to be expensive to be a good gift?
No. A quality lubricant and a storage pouch is a genuinely good present. The one place not to economize is material: a toy with no declared material is the only category of cheap here that is actually worth avoiding.
