Lovense: one app, a whole catalog, and the dependency that comes with it

Lovense is not really a shape or a material brand. It is an app with toys attached, and that single fact explains both what the range does better than anyone and where it is the wrong choice.

Almost every brand now sells one or two connected toys. Lovense built the whole catalog the other way round: the connection is the product, and the toys are endpoints for it. A single app drives a wearable egg, a wand, a prostate massager, a stroker and a thrusting machine, and the same remote link works between two phones in the same room or on opposite sides of the world.

That is a genuine capability and nobody else covers as many categories with it. It also means the thing you are buying is partly software, which changes what can go wrong.

What the range has in common

  • Bluetooth to a phone, internet between phones. The toy talks to the app over Bluetooth at short range; long-distance control is the app relaying commands over the internet. Both features need the app, and the remote one needs an account.
  • Patterns, sound and partner control. The app offers custom pattern creation, reaction to music or ambient sound, and handing control to another person. These are the features the hardware exists to deliver, and no button layout replaces them.
  • A deliberately plain hardware aesthetic. Smooth silicone, one button, magnetic charging on most of the range. Sealed shells are the norm, which is the right construction for a toy that gets used in a shower.
  • Strong availability and spare parts. Chargers and replacement cables are sold separately and stay available, which is less common in this market than it sounds and matters on a toy with proprietary contacts.
  • Firmware updates through the app. Useful when they fix a connection bug. It also means a toy that can need an update before it behaves, and an update path that depends on the app still being published.

Four from the range, by what they are actually for

  1. 1

The one the brand is known for

    LovenseLovense Lush 4

A wearable egg with an external antenna tail, designed to stay in during ordinary activity while someone else holds the control. It is the product that made remote control a category rather than a novelty, and the reason most people arrive at this brand.

    Strengths
    • Built for wearing rather than holding, which almost nothing else is
    • Long-distance control is the headline feature, not an afterthought
    • Sealed body with magnetic charging
    Limitations
    • The tail is firm enough to be noticeable when sitting
    • Remote use depends on an account and a connection
    • Bluetooth range to your own phone is short, so the phone has to stay nearby
    Best for
Partner control, in the room or across a continent.

If you want a wand that takes app patterns

    LovenseLovense Domi 2

A short rechargeable wand with real power for its size, and the only wand in common circulation that accepts custom app patterns and partner control. That combination is rare enough to be the reason to choose it over a plainer wand.

    Strengths
    • Powerful for a compact rechargeable wand
    • Accepts attachments with a standard wand head
    • App patterns on a wand, which almost no competitor offers
    Limitations
    • Louder than the small vibrators in the range, as every wand is
    • Shorter battery life than a mains wand has no limit on
    • Priced above non-connected wands of similar output
    Best for
Someone who wants wand-level intensity and the app features together.

  3. 3

For prostate use, with the control somewhere else

    LovenseLovense Edge 2

An adjustable prostate massager with a hinge that lets the angle be set to your own anatomy, which is the specification that decides whether a toy in this category does anything at all. Remote control is a bigger deal here than elsewhere, because reaching the toy mid-use is awkward.

    Strengths
    • Adjustable head angle rather than one fixed curve
    • Two motors, so perineal and internal stimulation are separate
    • Remote control removes the need to reach for it
    Limitations
    • The hinge adds bulk at the base
    • Finding the right angle takes more than one session
    • Not a first anal toy: start with something plainer
    Best for
Prostate stimulation where the controls need to be out of the way, or in someone else hand.

  4. 4

The long-distance half of a pair

    LovenseLovense Max 2

A stroker whose sleeve contracts and vibrates, and whose real purpose is pairing: it responds to a partner toy over the internet so that movement on one end drives sensation on the other. On its own it is an ordinary stroker, and that is the point to understand before buying it.

    Strengths
    • Pairs with the brand rotating toy for genuinely two-way long-distance use
    • Removable sleeve, so the consumable part is replaceable
    • Air-release valve gives some control over suction
    Limitations
    • Bulky and not quiet
    • Cleaning the sleeve properly takes real effort every time
    • Most of its value disappears if you are not using it with a partner
    Best for
Long-distance couples, specifically. Not a first stroker.

When another brand is the better answer

  • You want the quietest possible toy. Several brands build quieter motors at the same price, and a connected toy is not where this range competes.
  • You will never use the app. Then you are paying for software you have switched off. A plain vibrator from a brand that publishes the same materials costs less.
  • You want air pulse. That mechanism is the domain of other brands, and this range has nothing that competes with them at it.
  • You want a toy with no account anywhere near it. Local Bluetooth needs no account, but the feature set that justifies the price does. If that is a line for you, it is a clean reason to buy elsewhere.

Questions people ask

Do Lovense toys work without the app?
Yes, as plain vibrators driven from their own button. Patterns, sound reaction, partner control and long-distance use all need the app, and long-distance also needs an account.
Is the long-distance control reliable?
It depends on two internet connections and a relay service, so it behaves like any other real-time link: usually fine, occasionally laggy. The physical button on the toy always overrides it, which is the thing worth knowing in advance.
Are the toys waterproof?
Most of the range uses a sealed shell with magnetic charging, which is the construction that makes immersion possible. The rating is per model and published by the maker, so check the specific product rather than assuming it from the brand.
What happens if the app is discontinued?
The button on the toy keeps working and the connected features stop. That is the honest shape of the risk on any app-dependent toy, and it is the main argument for buying one only when the app feature is the reason for the purchase.
