Dildos & strap-ons

Thrusting dildos: two mechanisms sold under one name

One kind moves inside its own shell. The other pushes a shaft in and out. Buying the wrong one is the most common disappointment in this category.

The word thrusting covers two unrelated machines. The first has no external movement at all: a weight inside a sealed body is thrown back and forth, and the whole toy pulses against you. Nothing enters or leaves.

The second has a motorised shaft that genuinely travels in and out of a sleeve, with a stated stroke length. It does what the name says, and it brings the noise, the bulk and the failure modes of a small machine.

Choosing between the two mechanisms

  • Pulsating, sealed body. No moving parts exposed, fully washable, usually waterproof, and quiet relative to anything with a drive rod. The sensation is a firm knock rather than a stroke. Nothing to jam.
  • Motorised shaft. A real stroke, usually with a stated length and often with rotation as well. Noticeably louder, physically larger, and it has a mechanism that can and eventually will fail.
  • Stroke length, for the second kind. Short strokes at high speed feel like vibration. Long strokes at low speed are what people picture when they search for this. Published stroke length is the number to look for.
  • Suction base. Common on thrusting models and often weaker than the toy needs, because the toy is pushing against its own mount. Tile holds, textured surfaces do not.
  • Hands-free or handheld. A pulsating toy is comfortable to hold. A thrusting machine wants to be mounted, which is a different session to plan.

One of each

  1. 1

    The pulsating one

Fun FactoryFun Factory Stronic G / Real

A sealed silicone body with an internal mass that throws itself back and forth. No exposed mechanism, fully waterproof, and the quietest way to get a knocking rather than buzzing sensation.

    Strengths
    • Nothing exposed to jam or wear
    • Waterproof and easy to clean
    • Markedly quieter than a motorised shaft
    Limitations
    • Does not actually stroke, which disappoints people expecting it to
    • Needs to be held or braced to work against something
    Best for
Someone who wants the sensation without owning a small machine.

  2. 2

    The one that really strokes

    LovenseLovense Gravity

A motorised shaft with a published stroke length and app control, which is the configuration that does what the search term describes.

    Strengths
    • Genuine stroke with a stated length
    • App and remote control
    • Suction base for hands-free use
    Limitations
    • Audible in a quiet room
    • Mechanism is the part that fails over years
    • Depends on the brand app
    Best for
Someone who specifically wants in-and-out movement, not a pulse.

Buying the right one

  1. Decide whether you want movement or impact

If you want something that goes in and out, you want the motorised kind and you will accept the noise. If you want a strong rhythmic sensation, the pulsating kind is better at it and simpler in every way.

  2. Check who else is in the house

The motorised kind is audible through a door. The pulsating kind usually is not. This is the practical deciding factor more often than people expect.

  3. Look for the stated stroke length

If a motorised toy does not publish one, the stroke is probably short. A short stroke at speed is a vibrator with extra moving parts.

  4. Test the suction base on the actual surface

Before anything else, press it to the tile or the headboard and pull. Suction bases fail against texture, paint and anything slightly porous.

Questions people ask

Is a thrusting dildo the same as a sex machine?
No. A machine is an external frame driving an interchangeable attachment. A thrusting dildo is self-contained, with a stroke measured in a couple of inches rather than many.
Why does mine sound like a drill?
Because it is one, mechanically. A reciprocating motor in a hollow body is loud, and it gets louder when the body is braced against a hard surface that amplifies it.
Can these be used anally?
Only with a model that has a genuinely flared base, and with more lubricant than for vaginal use. Many thrusting toys have a suction base that is not an adequate flare.
Which one lasts longer?
The sealed pulsating kind, by a wide margin. It has no exposed mechanism, no sliding joint and no seal around a moving shaft to fail.
