Anal toys
Anal beads: the link between the beads is the product
Beads are the one anal toy where the part between the beads decides both the sensation and the safety.
Anal beads are a graduated series of spheres on a common link, ending in a handle or ring. The sensation comes from passing the muscle one bead at a time, and especially from drawing them back out, which is where the whole appeal of the category lives.
Three link types exist, and they are not variations on a theme. They determine how the toy moves inside you, how it can be cleaned, and whether it can fail.
The three kinds of link
- Moulded silicone, one piece. Beads and stem poured together with no seams and no join. Flexible, non-porous, boilable, and nothing to come apart. This is the only construction worth buying without reservations.
- Rigid spine, steel or glass. Beads fixed on a solid shaft. The whole set moves as one, which gives a very direct sensation and no independent movement between beads. Easy to clean, heavy, unforgiving on the taper.
- Beads threaded on a cord or string. The traditional cheap version. The cord traps fluid, cannot be sterilized, and is the construction that actually breaks. Avoid it outright.
The one worth naming
- 1
Moulded, flexible, and it vibrates
LeloLelo Soraya Beads
A one-piece silicone set with a ring handle and a motor in the stem. The one-piece construction is the part that matters; the vibration is a reason to pick this over an unpowered set rather than the reason to buy beads at all.
- Strengths
- Seamless silicone, nothing to come apart
- Ring handle wider than the beads
- Flexible stem follows the body instead of fighting it
- Limitations
- Expensive for a first set
- Motor adds charging and eventual failure to a toy that otherwise lasts forever
- Best for
- Someone who already knows beads suit them and wants a set to keep.
A first set, used well
Pick a set whose largest bead you would already be comfortable with
The graduation is a convenience, not a training ramp. If the last bead is bigger than anything you have used, you have bought a set with an unusable end.
Lubricate everything before you start
Run lubricant along the whole set. Stopping halfway to reapply is awkward and usually ends the session.
One bead at a time, with a pause after each
The muscle closes behind each bead and needs a moment. Pushing the whole set in at once is uncomfortable and skips the sensation you bought it for.
Practise the removal first
Slow, steady, and in line with the body. Find out how it feels at a calm moment rather than at an urgent one.
Questions people ask
- Can a set get stuck?
- A one-piece set with a proper ring cannot be drawn in past the ring. A corded set with a knot can break, and a set with loose beads can lose one. That is why the construction is the whole recommendation on this page.
- Should I pull them out quickly at orgasm?
- That image comes from fiction. Fast removal against a contracted muscle is the mechanism behind most bead-related tears. Steady removal during the build-up produces the same sensation without the risk.
- How do I clean them?
- One-piece silicone: soap and water, or boiling if there are no electronics. Steel and glass: the same, plus they tolerate anything. Corded sets: you cannot clean them properly, which is the argument against them.
- Are beads a good first anal toy?
- A small plug is usually gentler, because it asks the muscle to do one thing once. Beads ask it to open and close repeatedly, which is the appeal and also why it is not the easiest place to begin.
