Dildos & strap-ons
Glass dildos: the material is excellent, the inspection is mandatory
Glass is non-porous, non-reactive, compatible with every lubricant and effectively permanent. It also chips, and a chipped toy is a sharp toy.
The glass used in sex toys is borosilicate, the same family as laboratory glassware and ovenproof cookware. It is chosen because it tolerates thermal shock, which is what makes temperature play possible without the toy cracking in your hand.
On material grounds, it is one of the best choices available. It cannot absorb anything, nothing leaches out of it, it is unaffected by silicone or oil-based lubricant, and it can be sterilised by boiling. A glass toy bought once is a glass toy owned for twenty years.
The trade-off is single and absolute: glass fails by breaking, and it gives no warning. That is why this page spends more words on inspection than on shapes.
What to read on a listing
- Borosilicate, named. Not "glass", not "crystal", not "medical glass". Borosilicate is a specific composition with specific thermal behaviour, and a listing unwilling to name it is a listing to skip.
- Annealed, and said so. Annealing is the controlled cooling that removes internal stress from worked glass. Unannealed glass can fail from a temperature change alone. Reputable makers state it; cheap imports do not.
- A base wider than the shaft, moulded in one piece. Not a glued-on disc. For anal use the base is a safety requirement, and a glued base on glass is a failure point in both senses.
- Solid, not hollow. Hollow decorative glass exists and has no place internally.
- A seller who will replace a chipped item. Shipping damage to glass is common enough that the returns policy is part of the product.
Living with a glass toy
Inspect before, and again after
Before, for safety. After, because that is when a knock against the sink gets noticed rather than discovered next time.
Use any lubricant you like
Glass is the one material compatible with water, silicone and oil-based lubricant alike. Silicone lubricant on glass lasts far longer than water-based and does not degrade anything.
Clean it however you want
Soap and water, boiling for a few minutes, or the top rack of a dishwasher with no detergent. Sterilising glass is genuinely easy, which is most of why it is worth owning.
Store it padded and alone
The pouch it came in, or a sock, in a box where nothing can fall on it. Glass against glass or glass against steel in a drawer is how chips happen.
Never use one in the shower
Wet hands, hard floor. This is the most common way a glass toy is destroyed and occasionally the way someone gets cut.
Questions people ask
- Can a glass dildo break inside you?
- It is extremely rare with an intact annealed borosilicate toy, because the forces involved in use are low compared to an impact. It is a real risk with a toy that is already chipped or cracked, which is the entire reason for inspecting before every use.
- Is glass safe for anal use?
- Yes, with a one-piece base clearly wider than the shaft. The base is what keeps it retrievable, and on glass it must be moulded in rather than glued on.
- How hot or cold can it go?
- Warm or cool tap water, a few minutes, tested against your wrist. No microwave, no freezer, no boiling water onto a cold toy. Thermal shock resistance is better in borosilicate, not unlimited.
- Does it feel cold?
- At room temperature, yes, briefly, and it warms to body temperature quickly. Several minutes in warm water removes it entirely, and that is the usual answer for anyone who finds the first touch unpleasant.
